Healthcare Education in Cardiovascular Technology

In common man’s parlance, healthcare education in the country is mostly equated to MBBS! Since a couple of years, there has been a lot of discussion around MBA (Healthcare Management) also. But in contemporary days, there is one more upcoming field, and it is developing a resource pool of technically sound healthcare professionals to assist the mainstream practitioners in the area of cardio-vascular technology.
One of the most common life threatening diseases is related to the cardio-vascular system, and apart from the cardiologists, there is an imperative need of a different genre of healthcare professionals to assist them. These cardiovascular technologists need to be adept in diagnostic and intervention procedures, which may be invasive and non-invasive. Current management of various cardiac disorders includes complex diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, which involve use of the latest equipments, computers, tools, machines, and pharmacological agents. Optimal delivery of cardiovascular health care is based on the safe use of these equipments and devices, and trained specialists are the need of the hour. In fact, there is an increasing demand of these Cardiovascular Technologists (CVTs), those health care professionals who are an integral member of the cardiac catheterization and electrophysiology laboratory teams. The CVT’s primary role is to perform, at the direction of a qualified physician, technical procedures for the diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular injury and disease. Opportunities in healthcare education to create a cadre of these specialized professionals aren’t too many in our country. School of Allied Health Sciences at Ansal University has collaborated with Max Institute of Health Education and Research (MIHER) to advance the knowledge and skills in this area and develop human resources with an appropriate attitude. The popular three year under-graduate programme is B. Sc. (Cardio-vascular Technology) imparts hands-on practical learning to the students at Multi Specialty Hospitals under experienced technicians and medical staff. Highly qualified faculty having both hospital and teaching experience groom the students. By the end of the programme, the students transition as trained human resources working as cardio-vascular technologists, competent to independently handle subjects and medical equipment.
