Tamil Nadu Introduces U-Shape Classroom Seating to End ‘Back-Bencher’ Culture

In a bid to foster inclusive and interactive learning, the Tamil Nadu government has rolled out a new classroom seating initiative that replaces traditional rows with a U-shape or ‘pa’-shape (as referred to in Tamil). The goal is to eliminate the notion of “back-benchers” by ensuring that all students are equally visible and heard during lessons.

This student-centric arrangement encourages engagement, better communication, and improved classroom dynamics. The initiative is currently being implemented on a pilot basis across select schools and may be expanded state-wide based on its effectiveness.

Interestingly, a similar model was recently adopted by Ramavilasom Vocational Higher Secondary School (RVHSS) in Valakom, Kerala, reportedly inspired by teacher-student dynamics portrayed in a recent movie. Tamil Nadu’s approach aims to bring a long-term shift in classroom culture and make education more inclusive for all learners.
