CBSE to Launch Community Radio Station for Students and Teachers

New Delhi, August 2025 – The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is preparing to launch its own community radio station, dedicated to students, teachers, and other stakeholders. The proposal recently received approval during the Board’s Governing Body meeting.

Under the plan, CBSE will apply for a community radio licence in the coming months. Consultations with stakeholders and technical experts will be held over the next six months to finalise the application and design the content framework. Financial planning for the project is already in progress.

A senior CBSE official said the move will broaden the Board’s communication channels. “Once the licence is obtained, we will finalise the modalities for the content to be broadcast,” the official stated.

CBSE already operates Shiksha Vani, a podcast platform offering subject-related audio material for Classes 9 to 12. Available on Google Play Store, it hosts nearly 400 NCERT-based episodes.

The proposed radio station will work differently, offering a live, interactive platform for delivering information, guidance, and educational updates. The programming will cater to CBSE’s diverse community across India.

Community radio, India’s third tier of broadcasting, serves local communities with low-power transmissions, often in local languages and dialects. Such platforms provide space for underrepresented voices and cover topics from education and health to agriculture and social awareness.

India currently has 540 licensed community radio stations, mostly run by non-profits such as educational institutions and NGOs. The government supports these in rural and remote areas as tools for inclusive communication.

For CBSE, the initiative could strengthen outreach in regions with limited internet access. If timelines remain on track, the station could go live soon, making CBSE the first national education board in India to launch such a platform.
