Delhi University will introduce a new elective to assist students in navigating the frequently complex realm of contemporary relationships beginning with the 2025–2026 academic year. According to The Times of India, the psychology department is launching the course, “Negotiating Intimate Relationships,” to address the emotional challenges that many young adults encounter in today’s technologically advanced society.
The goal of the course, which has been offered on DU’s website since 2023, is to give undergraduate students the skills they need to comprehend friendships, love relationships, and mental health—particularly in the era of social media, dating apps, and continuous online communication. It will be worth four credits and is available to students with any academic background.
The campaign was launched in response to mounting worries about toxic relationships on college campuses causing emotional discomfort and even violence. The university aims to foster “greater emotional awareness and resilience among students” by introducing discussions like friendship, love, and emotional health into the classroom.
There are four main modules that make up the curriculum. The first focuses on the psychological formation of close relationships and friendships. The second looks at ideas of sexuality and love, such as the two-factor theory and Robert Sternberg’s triangular theory of love. The seminar next looks at the telltale indications of toxic relationships, such as abuse, manipulation, gaslighting, and envy. Lastly, students will discover how to create relationships that are enduring, meaningful, and supportive.
Tutorials promise to be engaging even if there won’t be a conventional practical component. Activities will include evaluating movies like Titanic and Kabir Singh, analyzing how pop culture depicts conflict and love, debating dating culture, and even examining how social media influences relationships. In order to evaluate relationship dynamics, students will also work directly with instruments such as Sternberg’s triangular love scale.
