Teachers in government schools in Chandigarh are required to wear a formal dress code

To encourage professionalism, equality, and a healthy learning environment, Chandigarh has implemented a formal dress code for government school teachers in a first-of-its-kind action. By the 2025 school year, the program will be extended over the entire city.

In an effort to improve professionalism and foster a supportive learning environment, the Chandigarh Education Department has instituted a formal dress code for teachers working in all of the city’s government schools.

An official statement released on Saturday states that female instructors will now be expected to wear sarees or salwar-kameez, while male teachers must now wear formal shirts and pants. According to the department, the goal of this program is to provide kids with a professional impression, promote equality, and standardize how teachers look.

This action made Chandigarh the first state or Union Territory to require government school instructors to wear a certain outfit. In accordance with the UT Administrator’s recommendation, the department emphasized that a uniform helps reduce socioeconomic disparities among employees and boosts school morale and team spirit.

The PM Shri Government Model Senior Secondary School, situated in Sector-14, Dhanas, is where the dress code was first implemented. Gulab Chand Kataria, the governor of Punjab and the administrator of Chandigarh, praised the decision, saying that teachers’ uniform appearance fosters inclusivity, professionalism, and pride.

By the beginning of the academic year following the summer break in 2025, the Education Department intends to extend the implementation throughout all Chandigarh government institutions.
