Kolkata, August 5 – The West Bengal government has officially extended the deadline for undergraduate admissions through its centralized online portal to midnight of August 5, 2025. This decision comes in response to recent updates concerning the OBC category list and legal developments around it.
The centralized UG admission portal—launched on July 17—is being used by 460 state-run and state-aided colleges affiliated with 17 universities across West Bengal for the 2025–26 academic session.
What Led to the Deadline Extension?
Initially, the admission process faced uncertainty due to a Calcutta High Court stay on the state’s revised OBC (Other Backward Classes) list. However, on July 28, the Supreme Court lifted the stay, allowing the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination (WBJEE) and UG admissions to move forward under the updated OBC categories.
Following the Supreme Court’s order, the Higher Education Department enabled students to update or upload their social category details on the portal starting July 29.
Final Deadline: August 5, Midnight
Speaking at the state secretariat, Chief Secretary Manoj Pant confirmed the final submission deadline:
“Candidates must submit or update their social category details by August 5, 12 midnight, via the official admission portal https://wbcap.in. No further extensions will be provided.”
He also emphasized that students who miss the deadline will be treated as default cases in accordance with existing rules. No further requests for updates or changes will be accepted beyond this date.
WBJEE 2025 Results on August 7
Meanwhile, students awaiting their WBJEE 2025 results can expect them to be declared on August 7, according to the WBJEE Board.
The entrance exam was conducted on April 27, and the results were initially scheduled for release by June 5. However, the legal complexities surrounding the OBC sub-caste list caused delays.
At a recent press conference, WBJEE Chairperson Sonali Chakraborty Banerjee explained:
“We were ready to declare the results by June 5, but the ongoing court case regarding the OBC list made it impossible.”
On July 29, the Calcutta High Court directed the state government and WBJEE Board to submit detailed affidavits by August 7, justifying the delay in releasing results. The directive was in response to a petition filed by a guardian of an aspirant.
