200 UK Companies Make the Move to Permanent 4-Day Workweek, Report Finds

UK Companies Four-day Work Week: Joe Ryle, the campaign director of the foundation, stated that four workdays will provide employees with over 50 percent free time, allowing them to lead happier and more fulfilling lives.

UK Four-day Work Week Revolution: Over 200 businesses in the UK have committed to a permanent four-day work week for all employees, ensuring no pay reduction. The Guardian, quoting the 4 Day Week Foundation, reports that the move, described as “ground-breaking” by many, affects over 5,000 employees in sectors such as technology, marketing, and charities.

Joe Ryle, campaign director of the foundation, talked to the English daily and stated that the five-day work model is “outdated” and “no longer fit for purpose.” Ryle added: “The 9-to-5, five-day workweek was created a century ago and no longer serves its intended purpose. An update is long overdue.

He went on to say that having four weekdays would result in employees having over 50 percent of their time free, allowing them to lead happier and more fulfilling lives. He believes that a four-day work week with no pay cut can benefit both employees and companies.

Out of the 200 companies, 30 firms from marketing, advertising, and press relations have embraced the new model; this is followed by 29 organizations from charity, NGO, and social care sectors; 24 from technology, software, and IT; and 22 from business, consulting, and management.

According to the English daily, the step will help companies attract and retain employees and improve productivity by creating the same output for less number of hours.

In 2022, the UK launched a pilot initiative called the 4 Day Week Campaign, involving around 70 companies aiming to transition to a four-day workweek. This trial was conducted in collaboration with researchers from the Universities of Cambridge and Oxford, Boston College, and the think-tank Autonomy.

In the middle of the trial, specifically in September, 88% of those companies reported that the transition to a four-day week was going well. Additionally, around 95% of the surveyed companies noted that regarding productivity, it had either remained unchanged or improved since the policy’s introduction.
