This policy builds on NEP 2020 and emphasizes various innovative reforms designed to make Indian education more comprehensive, adaptable, and pertinent to the challenges of the 21st century. Below is a thorough analysis of the key changes expected and their potential impact on the educational landscape. 

A New Structure: Transitioning from 10+2 to 5+3+3+4

The structure of school education is undergoing the most radical change in NEP 2024. The previous 10+2 structure has been substituted with a 5+3+3+4 system. This new structure is more suitable for the age group and aligned with developmental stages.

  • Foundational Stage (Ages 3-8): This stage encompasses three years of pre-primary education before grades 1 and 2. This level stresses play-based and activity-based learning, which helps to establish a solid foundation for cognitive and socio-emotional development.
  • Preparatory Stage: This stage includes grades 3 to 5, corresponding to ages 8 to 11 years. This stage places a strong focus on developing literacy and numeracy skills. The children encounter more organized learning, while education is mostly experiential and centered on activities.
  • Middle Stage: Ages 11 to 14, encompassing Grades 6 through 8. This stage redirects the children towards subject-oriented approaches in fields such as sciences, mathematics, arts, social sciences, and humanities.
  • Secondary Stage (Ages 14-18): Covering grades 9 through 12, this stage provides increased flexibility and subject choices, removing strict streaming divisions. The goal of this stage is to enhance students’ comprehension of subjects and equip them for higher education and vocational routes.

Multidisciplinary Learning: Breaking Down Silos

 It is suggested that the strict division of academic streams into Arts, Science, and Commerce be dismantled. Students will have the liberty to select subjects that span multiple disciplines. This fosters an interdisciplinary approach, promoting a more comprehensive education that enhances skills such as critical thinking and problem-solving. For example, a student with an interest in both music and physics can study these two subjects. This will enhance and tailor his educational experience even further

Board Examinations: Lowered Pressure, Greater Flexibility 

The NEP 2024 reduces the high-pressure nature of board examinations by permitting them to be conducted biannually. It is frequently stated that these assessments have played a crucial role in reducing the pressure of exams. Thus, students will have multiple chances to demonstrate their best performance from any exam. Students will be permitted to keep their highest scores, ensuring that one unfortunate day does not impact their future opportunities.

It foresees a future where examinations can be taken “on demand”, placing less emphasis on rote learning and focusing more on the student’s understanding and competence.

Language Learning: Welcoming Diversity 

As per NEP 2024, it is mandatory to teach two languages in Classes XI and XII, with at least one being an Indian language. It aims to enrich linguistic diversity and serve as a tool for safeguarding India’s diverse cultural heritage. It is aligned with the larger objective of making education more inclusive and representative of India’s multilingual reality.

Early Childhood Education: Starting Young 

NEP 2024 extends the age range for free and compulsory education from 3 to 18 years while emphasizing the necessity of pre-school education. The new policy provides three years of pre-primary education, acknowledging that 85 percent of a child’s brain development occurs before the age of six. This notion is positioned as part of an initiative to establish a robust foundation for lifelong learning and development.
