Exam reform commission advises restructuring and wants NTA to just administer entrance examinations

According to Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, NTA would stop holding recruitment exams in 2025. In response to claims of irregularities in the NEET-UG exam, the panel was established.

The National Testing Agency (NTA) should be completely restructured with an emphasis on administering admission exams, according to the recommendations of the government-appointed council on exam changes. The commission recommends creating a mechanism for allocating testing centers, switching to online tests, and implementing multi-level testing for applicant pools larger than two lakh. It also recommends implementing a “Digi Exam” system to stop impersonation.

The seven-member panel was established in June of this year in response to claims of irregularities in the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (Undergraduate), or NEET-UG test. It is chaired by K. Radhakrishnan, a former chairman of the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO). The counseling process was delayed by over two months as a result of the medical admission exam being plagued by accusations of cheating and paper leaks.

On Tuesday, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan released the report’s findings and declared that the National Testing Agency would stop administering recruitment tests in 2025.

Dharmendra Pradhan declared, “Starting next year, NTA will only concentrate on administering entrance exams for higher education and will not conduct any recruitment exams.”

At the moment, the NTA also administers entrance tests for a number of colleges and higher education organizations. According to Pradhan, the panel’s recommendations are currently being implemented.

The panel also suggested that the head of the agency, who is now known as the Director-General (DG), should not be a person lower than the additional secretary rank in the Government of India’s central employment structure. It stated that in order to guarantee seamless and ongoing operation, the DG should occupy a specialized leadership role free from outside interference.

The panel also suggested that the NTA create important functional verticals with competent leaders at each level. These comprise departments for research and development, testing center infrastructure, digital infrastructure and technology, and communication and coordination.
