To aid in their development, these five IITs have been allocated more than Rs 1,830 crore for the 2024-25 financial year.
Sukanta Majumdar, the Minister of State for Education, stated that the total number of seats in 23 IITs has risen over the past decade, from 65,000 to 1.35 lakh. On March 10, he provided a written reply in the Lok Sabha that included this information.
In response to a question about whether the government had increased IIT seats by over 100% and asked about further infrastructure improvements, especially at IIT Patna and IIT Delhi, to support an additional 6,500 students, the minister replied.
Majumdar confirmed that the 2025-26 budget includes provisions for expanding infrastructure in the 5 IITs established post-2014. This encompasses the hostel and academic amenities at IIT Patna.
The announcement has been made in Budget 2025-26 to develop additional infrastructure in the five IITs established after 2014, in order to support education for an additional 6,500 students. Majumdar stated, “It was also announced to expand the capacity of hostels and other infrastructure at IIT Patna.”
He further mentioned that IIT Hyderabad (Telangana), IIT Kanpur, IIT-BHU Varanasi (Uttar Pradesh), IIT Tirupati (Andhra Pradesh), and IIT Patna (Bihar) are currently functioning from their permanent campuses. To aid in their development, these five IITs have been allocated more than Rs 1,830 crore for the 2024-25 financial year.
In the meantime, IIT Madras made a significant update by initiating admissions for undergraduate programs aimed at students who have distinguished themselves in national and international Olympiads. These Olympiads serve as competitive exams that evaluate and test students across a range of academic disciplines and abilities.
According to IIT-Madras, this admission, dubbed ‘Science Olympiad Excellence’ (ScOpE), will fall outside the JEE (Advanced) framework, with students being admitted starting from the 2025-2026 academic year.
Like the Sports Excellence Admissions and Fine Arts and Culture Excellence modes, ScOpE will also feature two supernumerary seats per program, with one seat designated exclusively for women students. The eligibility requirements, including passing Class 12 and age, among others, are the same as those for JEE Advanced in the respective year. In previous years, the candidate should also not have been admitted to an IIT.
