Which Indian Engineering Institution was the first to be founded?

In the Architecture and Planning area of the National Institute Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2024, IIT Roorkee holds the top spot. IIT Roorkee is also ranked in the top 10 in the categories of innovation, engineering, overall, and research.

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee, formerly known as Roorkee College, was the country’s first engineering college. It was first founded in 1847 under the name Roorkee College, but in 1854 it changed its name to Thomason College of Civil Engineering in honor of its mentor, James Thomason.

On November 25, 1949, the Thomason College of Civil Engineering became the first engineering university in independent India, becoming the University of Roorkee. On September 21, 2001, the Indian government transformed the university into an IIT.

In addition to doctoral research programs, IIT Roorkee’s 21 academic departments and centers offer 12 undergraduate engineering and architecture courses, three engineering dual degree programs, and more than 48 postgraduate courses in Engineering, Architecture, Sciences, Computer and Mathematical Applications, and Business Administration.

In the Architecture and Planning area of the National Institute Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2024, IIT Roorkee holds the top spot. IIT Roorkee is also in the top 10 in the categories of innovation, engineering, overall, and research. It is in ninth place in the NIRF research category, eighth overall in the NIRF 2024 rankings, and sixth in the NIRF engineering and innovation categories.

According to the 2025 QS World University Rankings, it is placed 335th overall. It is listed at 387 in the QS sustainability rating and between 51 and 70 in the QS WUR rating by subject.

IIT Roorkee will reveal the GATE 2025 results in the meantime. Every year, the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE), a nationwide exam, evaluates applicants’ thorough comprehension of a range of undergraduate-level disciplines in Engineering, Technology, Architecture, Science, Commerce, the Arts, and Humanities.

The eligible individuals can enroll in Master of Engineering (ME), Master of Technology (MTech), and doctoral programs at IITs, NITs, IIITs, and other universities. Additionally, they can apply to different PSUs using their score.
