Companies providing Gen-Z student internships prior to full-time positions

As more students from Generation Z (Gen-Z) graduate and enter the workforce, their professional attitudes have become a topic of discussion over the past few years. Colleges and universities’ placement officers have noticed a new trend in which graduates are being offered internships rather than direct job offers as a means of evaluating their professionalism.

Rather than conducting a one-off interview, corporate companies now prefer to familiarize themselves with their candidates through internships lasting three to six months. “Nowadays, everyone is ‘AI-enabled’, and students receive tactical training for 20-minute interviews. Monisha Aluvilla, who leads the office of placements and career guidance for management studies at Christ University, explained, “But the real calibre of candidates can only be assessed when they work in an organisation.”

As an example, Augustine George, who is the Principal of Kristu Jayanti College, Autonomous, mentioned that this standard motivates students to enhance their skills. “Firms favor training students during their internships and subsequently integrating them based on their performance. It helps ensure that students stay on course, as they must demonstrate their competence to work for the company. He stated that this occurs mainly among management and commerce students, with a typical conversion rate of 90%.

According to placement officers from some other educational institutions, this situation frequently causes worries for students and colleges alike, as there is no assurance of conversion. Some also encounter problems regarding the stipend, which typically varies from approximately ₹25,000 to ₹50,000. These colleges reported a conversion rate ranging from 60% to 70%.
