IIT-Madras will accept students who excel in Olympiads, with no JEE score necessary

Seats allocated under this scheme will be determined by the ScOpE Rank List (SRL), which reflects candidates’ performances and achievements in five Olympiads (Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Informatics, and Biology).

The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) initiated admissions to undergraduate programs for students who excel in national and international Olympiads, following the introduction of cultural and sports quotas last year. These Olympiads serve as competitive exams that evaluate and test students across a range of academic disciplines and abilities.

According to IIT-Madras, this admission, dubbed ‘Science Olympiad Excellence’ (ScOpE), will fall outside the JEE (Advanced) framework, with students being admitted starting from the 2025-2026 academic year.

Like the Sports Excellence Admissions and Fine Arts and Culture Excellence modes, ScOpE will also feature two supernumerary seats per program, with one seat designated exclusively for women students. The eligibility requirements, including passing Class 12 and age, among others, are the same as those for JEE Advanced in the respective year. In previous years, the candidate should also not have been admitted to an IIT.

Applications for the first batch will open on June 3, 2025. You can find the comprehensive guidelines and business rules for ScOpE admission at the following website.

Prof V Kamakoti, director of IIT Madras, articulated the vision for ScOpE admissions by stating, “The world’s grandest puzzles aren’t solved by memorizing textbooks, but by those who dare to dismantle them, piece by piece, and create new wonders for future generations. With this vision, IIT Madras begins another new journey by offering admission to its highly sought-after undergraduate programs for candidates who have shown excellence in science Olympiads.

Seats allocated under this scheme will be determined by the ScOpE Rank List (SRL), which reflects candidates’ performances and achievements in five Olympiads (Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Informatics, and Biology). For details on how to prepare the ScOpE rank list, the rules will be made available on the website.

The IITM-SCOPE portal is intended solely for admissions to various academic programs at IIT Madras under SCOPE admission only.

Candidates must submit separate applications on the JoSAA portal for the academic programs at IIT Madras and/or other IITs where seats are available through JoSAA.
