Could remote monitoring be the answer to unethical behavior in high-stakes exams?

The leak of the NEET UG 2024 exam paper caused a nationwide uproar, raising doubts about the reliability of India’s examination system. The dispute caused distress among millions of students, who feared for their academic future.

The NEET UG paper leak was the major controversy in India’s education system in 2024. The discovery of a question paper leak shortly before the test provoked extensive arguments, shattering the hopes of many students and raising concerns about the security and fairness of education as a whole. Many students were supposed to experience a year of academic success and joy, but for millions, it became a nightmare because of the suspected compromise of numerous high-stakes tests, casting doubt on India’s educational system.

The leak not only jeopardized the exam’s fairness but also exacerbated the feelings of thousands of aspirants and resulted in considerable tension, pressure, and confusion. A lot of students have spent months or even years there. The integrity of the examination process was rigorously scrutinized, as it crushed the hopes of students and their parents who were getting ready for this crucial test. The leak’s news disrupted their plans and halted their future aspirations.

To guarantee proper conduct during examinations and to oversee the tests in order to avert dishonest practices, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has recently mandated the installation of CCTVs in all schools designated as board exam centers.

Anuj Rajain, Global Chief Strategy Officer at Tenon Group, posed the question: Is remote monitoring the solution to inequity in high-stakes exams?

Remote Monitoring could revolutionize the protection of exam centers’ overall security, serving as a necessary solution to address the concerns. It guarantees comprehensive security for the examination process, creating a seamless environment by leveraging state-of-the-art Internet of Things (IoT) devices and Artificial Intelligence (AI) capabilities.

IMPROVED WATCHFULNESS

The remote monitoring system employs high-resolution cameras with real-time monitoring features, offering a complete view of the exam centre. When the right watchfulness is implemented, this acts not only as a caution to would-be wrongdoers but also records dubious behavior that is instantly exposed and dealt with. A recent report states that effective AI surveillance can reduce cheating incidents by as much as 50 percent.

This will also guarantee that security breaches, like cheating and unauthorized access, are detected and prevented. Furthermore, ongoing surveillance of examination centres combined with prompt alerts regarding dubious behaviour can assist in averting such occurrences down the line. This is due to the fact that AI-driven systems can initiate automatic responses to security issues, thereby lessening reliance on human involvement.

Utilizing sophisticated software, real-time video streams can assist in detecting any suspicious actions and signal suspicious conduct, including unauthorized communication or movement. While this greatly reduces the reliance on human supervisors, it raises the likelihood of any misconduct occurring. AI systems excel at detecting hidden patterns and behaviors that suggest cheating, which makes them a valuable asset for promoting fair exam practices.

  • CCTV cameras that leverage AI technology are capable of identifying and detecting dubious actions—like abnormal movements, attempts at unauthorized entry, or disturbances—and notifying security personnel in real time.
  • Facial recognition technologies driven by AI confirm the identities of examinees based on their registration data, thus preventing impersonation attempts.AI can analyze live camera feeds to assess crowd density and alert them to potential overcrowding.

CENTRALISED MONITORING

The centralised monitoring facility is capable of overseeing multiple exam centres at the same time, maintaining a close watch on each one. This method enables swift intervention if any misconduct occurs. Additionally, it guarantees a consistent application of exam regulations in all centres. This concept is especially advantageous in situations involving multiple exam centres, as coordinating on-site supervision and physical security can prove difficult.

Smart entry systems are door access solutions equipped with IoT functionality that limit entry to authorized users through biometric verification or smart cards, while also recording access information. The sensors located at the entry points can identify any unauthorised attempts to enter or leave the exam centre and notify security staff. AI algorithms are capable of analyzing data from different sensors to detect abnormal behavior that may suggest potential security threats.

AI can pinpoint security threats and notify us to implement preventative actions by examining historical data.

To protect the integrity of high-stakes exams such as the CBSE for classes 10 and 12, remote monitoring is being implemented. Its success, however, hinges on the cooperation of various stakeholders, including exam-conducting organizations such as the National Testing Agency (NTA), technology providers, and policymakers.

By addressing concerns regarding privacy, technical infrastructure, and accessibility while adopting a balanced approach, it is possible to create a more secure and fair examination environment for all students.
