Engineering aspirants worried over delay in admissions

Students aspiring for admission to engineering courses in Maharashtra are worried about the delay in the academic year as their Common Admission Process (CAP) is scheduled to begin from Sunday, almost a month since their entrance test results were out.

The result of MH-CET, which is the entrance test for admission to engineering courses, in Maharashtra was out on June 16. As per regular practice, the Common Entrance Test (CET) Cell declares CAP schedule after the MH-CET result is out. But until July first week, there was no clarity on CAP schedule.

On July 4, the CET Cell finally declared the CAP schedule for professional courses, including for engineering admissions, stating that the process will commence from July 10. “But soon after a few days on July 9, an updated CAP schedule was declared informing that commencement of CAP schedule for engineering admissions is postponed to July 14. We now hope that it begins as planned and there is no further extension,” said one of the students, adding that they are already missing out on having options due to different admission schedules.

One of the parents of the aspirants said, “Generally students have options to choose between colleges with different admissions happening simultaneously. But private and deemed universities have already started their admissions whereas the CAP to be held by Maharashtra CET Cell for admission to engineering colleges affiliated to public universities is yet awaited. This has already led to limited options for students.”

A total of 7,25,052 candidates appeared for the MHT-CET who are waiting for admissions to courses in engineering, pharmacy and agriculture. All these students are waiting for the CAP to start. These are only those who appeared for MHT-CET. Maharashtra CET Cell conducts more CETs and holds CAP for a total of 18 professional courses, out of which CAP has started for only seven courses.

An official from the CET cell assured that there should not be further delay in the process. “CAP for different courses will commence as per the updated admission schedule declared on July 9,” said the official.
