Maha Kumbh 2025: Was viral IIT Baba Abhay Singh expelled by Juna Akhara?

Abhay Singh, who gained fame as IIT Baba following his viral interview at Maha Kumbh, has reportedly been expelled from the Juna Akhara.

Abhay Singh, a graduate from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay who gained fame as “IIT Baba” at the Maha Kumbh, has been expelled by the Juna Akhara. During the Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj, Singh is recognized for making audacious remarks against his own family.

Singh, who has more than three lakh Instagram followers, garnered significant attention at the Kumbh, especially following a viral interview that showcased his transition from a successful engineering career to spirituality.

However, his rapid rise took a shocking turn as he became entangled in multiple controversies, with family statements regarding his mental health and subsequent reports suggesting he had vanished from the grand fair. And now reports indicate that he has been expelled for showing disrespect to his ‘guru’.

WHAT WAS THE REASON FOR JUNA AKHARA’S EXPULSION OF IIT BABA?

Abhey Singh is now prohibited from entering the Juna akhara camp and its vicinity. The Akhara underscored that commitment to one’s guru and self-discipline are core principles of Sanyas.

Abhay Singh’s actions breach the essential tenets of Sanyas and the revered guru-shishya (master-disciple) tradition. Mahant Hari Giri, the chief patron of Juna Akhara, stated, “To disrespect one’s guru is to show deep disregard for Sanatan Dharma and the principles upheld by the akhara.”

Hari Giri added, “In light of this infringement, the Akhara’s disciplinary committee suggested he be expelled.” In addition, other seers at the ashram informed Aaj Tak that IIT Baba’s frequent media engagements were impacting his mental condition and resulting in “inappropriate” remarks. They also charged him with drug use. Consequently, Juna Akhara concluded that it would be best for him to depart from the ashram.

WHAT WAS IIT BABA’S RESPONSE?

Previously, there were reports indicating that Ahay Singh had vanished from the Maha Kumbh. In response, he said, “They spread wrong news about me,” IIT Baba replied. “The people running the Madi Ashram requested that I leave at night. Now they believe I’ve gained fame and that I could reveal something about them, so they’re asserting that I’ve gone for secret meditation. Those individuals are speaking nonsense.

Abhay Singh also countered assertions regarding his mental health and challenged the credibility of those evaluating it.

“Who are these psychologists who understand my mental state better than I do?” He stated, in defense of his mental well-being, “They should know more than I do in order to grant me a certificate.”

WHO IS IIT BABA?

Abhay Singh, who was born into a Jat family in Haryana, distinguished himself academically and obtained an aerospace engineering degree from IIT Bombay. He then finished a master’s program in design and worked for a brief period in Canada at an aircraft manufacturing firm, where he was said to have earned Rs 3 lakh monthly.

Singh’s interest in spirituality intensified during the Covid-19 lockdown in Canada. He made the choice to go back to India, where he adopted a nomadic way of life, investigating spiritual centers such as Ujjain and Haridwar.

Although his family was supportive at first, they eventually became worried about his spiritual inclination. They raised concerns about his mental health and went so far as to reach out to law enforcement multiple times. After cutting off all connection to his family, Singh left home six months ago.

Karan Singh, the father of IIT Baba, responded to inquiries regarding his son’s decisions by telling Aaj Tak, “Whatever decision he took for himself is right for him. I don’t want to apply any pressure on him. He is a man who thinks for himself.
