Student visas can now be revoked for minor driving infractions in the US

According to the news agency, US student visas are being revoked for a variety of reasons, often with little warning to students or educational institutions.

The United States may now cancel student visas for minor traffic infractions in response to increased monitoring of foreign students. International students who are caught speeding or engaging in other infractions risk having their visas immediately revoked, the Associated Press said. Their F-1 visa status would be terminated as a result, and they would have to leave the country right once.

The report also emphasizes that a variety of justifications are being given for the revocation of student visas, frequently with little to no warning to the students or their schools. According to reports, students at prestigious universities including Harvard, Stanford, the University of Michigan, UCLA, and Ohio State University have lost their legal status as a result of minor traffic violations.

According to the article, several universities have not yet contacted the government to inquire about the reason behind the student visa cancellation since they are still unsure.

As Michelle Mittelstadt, Director of public affairs at the Migration Policy Institute, told AP, “What you’re seeing happening with international students is really a piece of the much greater scrutiny that the Trump administration is bringing to bear on immigrants of all different categories.”

By looking up changes to an individual’s immigration status in the federal database, a number of college administrators and students learned about the revocation.

The data shows that while the total number of applications from all nations decreased over the past ten years, the percentage of student visa denials rose. The overall number of applications over this time period peaked in 2014–15 at 8.56 lakh, but it steadily declined over the following few years, reaching a low of 1.62 lakh in the 2019–2020 Covid year.
