Three Rajasthan Universities Barred from PhD Admissions for Five Years

Three universities in Rajasthan have been prohibited by the University Grants Commission (UGC) from enrolling PhD students for five years because of breaches of regulations and academic standards.

Three universities in Rajasthan have been prohibited from admitting PhD students for the next five years. UGC imposed the ban decision due to non-compliance with and violations of the rules and regulations for doctoral programmes established by UGC. The three universities are OPJS University located in Churu, Sunrise University situated in Alwar, and Singhania University found in Jhunjhunu. From 2025-26 to 2029-30, these universities are prohibited from enrolling any PhD students.

UGC Chairman M Jagadesh Kumar emphasized the necessity for universities to uphold the utmost standards in PhD programmes, and warned that institutions failing to adhere to UGC regulations regarding these programmes will face stringent measures.

The Standing Committee, which was assigned the role of advising on measures to be taken against institutions that do not comply, discovered that these universities deviated from UGC PhD regulations and academic standards in their process of awarding doctoral degrees. The universities were provided with a chance to offer explanations, but their answers were deemed unsatisfactory.

Additionally, the UGC Chairman stated that the regulatory body is evaluating its oversight and supervision of other universities. He stated, “We are reviewing the quality of PhD programs at various other institutions, and if any violations are found, suitable measures will be implemented.”

Manish Joshi, the UGC Secretary, stated that a standing committee discovered violations of UGC’s PhD regulations and academic norms by universities in their awarding of doctoral degrees. Consequently, for five years they have been prohibited from accepting new PhD students.

He also recommended that potential students and their parents steer clear of enrolling in PhD programs at these universities, as degrees from these institutions will not be recognized for further education or employment.
