5 National Athletes Ace JEE Advanced to Secure Admissions at IIT Madras

These athletes have successfully cleared JEE Advance 2024, opening the door to IIT Madras via the ‘Sports Excellence Admission category’.

Five Indian athletes have gained admission to IIT Madras via the ‘Sports Excellence Admission category’. These sports people have obtained IIT seats by passing the JEE Advanced 2024. The initiative includes students who have excelled in sports and received awards for their achievements.

In the undergraduate program, two extra seats were allocated for Indians. A female student has a reserved seat. Through the sports excellence admission programme, deserving students are encouraged to pursue higher education while continuing their involvement in sports.

Professor V Kamakoti, the director of IIT Madras, stated, “The sports excellence admission initiative at IIT Madras aims primarily to convey that young children should be encouraged to play during their childhood. I truly hope this gets to everyone involved.

The following five athletes have been accepted under the ‘Sports Excellence Admission’ category for the 2024-25 academic year:

  1. Aryaman Mandal (Swimming and Water Polo) B.Tech (CSE)
  2. Arohi Bhave (Volleyball) BS (Medical Sciences and Engineering)
  3. Prabhav Gupta (Table Tennis) B.Tech (AI and Data Science)
  4. Vangala Vedavachan Reddy (Lawn Tennis) BTech (AI and Data Science)
  5. Nandini Jain (Squash) B.Tech (Computer Science and Engineering)

Professor Mahesh Panchagnula emphasized the importance of the program, noting that while multiple applications were received, they chose five students who excel in sports and meet academic qualifications.

“IIT Madras is committed to integrating technology into the sports arena to enhance the performance of athletes and coaches,” stated Professor Mahesh.

The admission procedure for SEA involves the JEE examination, and candidates must qualify in JEE Advance via a separate portal managed by IIT Madras. Candidates must have obtained a rank on either the Common Rank List (CRL) or category-wise rank list in JEE Advanced to qualify for admission through the program.

A person must have secured victory in at least one event that is classified as national or international and won a medal in it.
