All eyes are on the distribution of textbooks in Kashmiri schools

The matter has gained attention as the J&K government reinstated the earlier November-December academic session this year, allowing students to begin new classes immediately after winter breaks.

Srinagar: Attention has turned to the Jammu and Kashmir Board of School Education (JKBOSE) for the prompt distribution of textbooks to students after the declaration of winter vacation.

The matter has gained attention as the J&K government reinstated the earlier November-December academic session this year, enabling students to begin new classes straight after the winter break. Stakeholders, such as teachers and parents, have expressed their worries, referencing their previous experiences where the book distribution process faced delays for unclear reasons in schools throughout Kashmir.

This year, after schools reopened in March, there was an excessive delay in delivering textbooks to schools, putting students in a difficult position. Referencing previous experiences, the school teachers are once more anxious about the delay in obtaining textbooks from JKBOSE for the schools.

“We have encountered this before as well.” The textbooks always arrive at schools late. “Even when textbooks arrive at schools, students never get a full set since two to three textbooks are consistently missing,” a teacher from Baramulla informed Greater Kashmir.

The educators mentioned that in 2025, students will enroll directly in the new classes, and schools must obtain the textbooks beforehand. “The department should have addressed the issue with the JKBOSE officials to guarantee prompt distribution of textbooks, as delays in obtaining books are costly for students,” the school teacher stated. As previously mentioned, the two-year tenure of the current Chairman of the JK Board of School Education (BOSE) is coming to a close, and a new chairman should be appointed to ensure that the printing and distribution of textbooks proceed without any delays.

The current chairman, Prof Parikshat Singh Manhas, was designated as the Chairman JKBOSE on January 25, 2023, on a deputation basis for two years. According to the order, his appointment took effect “from the date the notification of his appointment was issued.” In accordance with established guidelines, the current chairman will vacate his position on January 25, 2025.

“We are constantly prepared.” Textbooks undergo various processes, including content review and additional procedures. Dr. Sudhir Singh stated, “We also consider the regions that stay inaccessible because of snowfall and we aim to deliver the textbooks to these snow-locked areas promptly.”

The Director of Academics guaranteed that there will be no hold-up in the delivery of textbooks to schools.
