The latest Annual Status of Education Report (ASER)-2024 reveals that while primary class students have poor learning outcomes, they perform fairly well in arithmetic.
The learning outcomes and arithmetic proficiency of school children in primary and upper primary classes of government schools across Kashmir have exhibited variable trends. As per the findings of the latest Annual Status of Education Report (ASER)-2024, the primary class students have poor learning outcomes but perform fairly in arithmetic.
Nonetheless, the trend begins to change as students move up to higher classes. The ASER-2024 has highlighted that as students move from primary to upper primary classes, their grasp of learning outcomes becomes stronger compared to their understanding of arithmetic levels.
The survey indicates that the learning outcomes of primary class students improve after they transition to the upper primary level. Nonetheless, students’ arithmetic performance at the upper primary level is lacking in comparison to their performance at the primary level.
As an illustration, merely 47% of pupils from 3rd to 5th primary in Ganderbal district can read text at the 2nd primary level. In contrast, the students in the same grades are performing fairly in arithmetic, as 65.7 percent of these classes can do subtraction.
However, students in 6th to 8th grade demonstrate poor learning outcomes compared to their arithmetic performance, as 69.9% can read a 2nd primary level text while only 45.2% can perform division.
The results of the most recent survey have presented a significant challenge for the government, as students’ learning outcomes at the primary level are subpar and the arithmetic indicates a decline after they move up to upper primary classes.
According to the ASER-2024, 43.7% of students in classes 3 to 5 in Pulwama district can read 2nd primary level text, and 66.7% can perform subtraction.
The survey has shown, however, that only 74.3 percent of students in the same classes within the district can read a 2nd primary level text, and only 41.1 percent can perform division. In the Bandipora district, 29.3% of students from 3rd to 5th primary classes can read a text at the 2nd primary level, while 54.3% can perform subtraction.
At the upper primary level, 57.1% of students in grades 6 to 8 can read a class 2 primary level text, and 47.8% can perform division.
In the Budgam district, merely 24.7% of students in grades 3 to 5 of primary school can read a class 2 primary-level text, whereas 55.2% are capable of performing subtraction. Only 45.7 percent of upper primary students can read 2nd primary level text, and only 34.8 percent can perform division. The findings of the survey have shown that the situation in other districts is similar, with comparable trends among students at both the primary and upper primary levels.
